I don't think it makes for healthy preaching habitually to apply the Bible to people who are absent, that's what blog posts are for :)

lol I second that, Jon! Reading Nietzsche challenged me to make sure I'm living an authentic faith based on grace & freedom & a genuine relationship with God, not man-made religion. He did a fantastic job of exposing & demolishing hypocrytical Christianity... just that he seemed incapable of understanding the nature of true Christianity.

Awesome stuff Ed! It's long been my belief that the reason we struggle so much with evangelism is because of all the mental barriers we've taught ourselves. The problem lies most often with us and our awkwardness and protectiveness about our faith.

Perhaps we should learn from Daniel and be public about our faith. If Jesus is integral to our everyday lives than we ought to be transparent about that... and perhaps doing so will take the focus off what people will think and onto Who we are following...

"We read the text and say the words, so often think ‘yeah, but it can’t really mean that’. We substitute in a watered-down interpretation."

Ouch! But yeah, shockingly, disappointingly, it's so true.

Going off on a tangent a bit, but reflecting on this idea that we have a resistance in some sense to actually getting what God is telling us. We have this resistance to fix up our broken thinking, despite knowing that we aren't alright...

Sometimes I wonder about what would I be like if I actually loved people as much as God does. Just tonight actually I was watching a very disturbing doco about murder crimes in Japan, and as I reflected, I realised I really don't care nearly, nearly, nearly as much as God does about the horrendous, cruel, revoltingly filthly injustices in this world that happen every single day. Imagine if I started really reading the Bible humbly. Revamping my thinking so that I loved people heaps more than I do. If I got pained heaps heaps more than I do currently about the injustice and suffering in this world?
Wow. That's worth it. Please make it happen, God. Amen

Thanks Dave, just read this blog. Very helpful and again, easy to relate too. I liked you're playful comment that you don't need to let a book hurl the same taunts that our mates do about reading it.

It's interesting about the 'magic' point. Perhaps when we read the Bible as Australians we sometimes feel the consumer/results-driven attitude toward what we read, with ideas like 'what am I going to get out of this?' Maybe we expect to always get a personal practical application for ourselves in a passage, otherwise it's not 'relevant' for us. I resonated with point3.

To try to further discussion, maybe you could write about how we at unichurch can change how we talk about the Bible in our convos at unichurch and throughout the week? Like, being aware that a lot of our mates feel as you did last year about the Bible, how can we talk about it naturally, without sounding like super Christians? It seems that talking about a passage that you and the 'other person' are familiar with makes it easier to start...kinda both of you are on the same page. Comments anyone??

I love the way he considers the writings of Harris, Dawkins and Hitchens and it makes him look back at Nietzsche, Voltaire and Hume with a certain fondness, that at least in those days atheists had some clue what they were talking about!
