The Fear
February 17th, 2010 by Sally Surrey Posted in UncategorizedPopular song artists today tap into markets which express feelings which ‘normal society’ wouldn’t allow one to. This is epitomised by Lily Allen’s song ‘The Fear.’
It talks of a society so indoctrinated by other people’s opinions of what it is to be successful, that one can no longer think for it’s self and boundaries between right and wrong become blurred in the race to succeed. This leads to ‘the fear’. Fear of not succeeding in the world’s eyes, fear of not being pretty or rich or famous enough.
As Christians today, we too are susceptible to this ‘fear’. We can fill our minds with what the world is telling us, and worry about how we compare to our others. However, the bible encourages us to fix our minds upon Christ and battle against worldly desires. We no longer need to be consumed by the fear of what others/the world thinks of us, because Jesus accepts and loves us totally, as we are.

One Response to “The Fear”

This is great to be reminded of especially after our bible study on Tues about the Sermon on the Plain, and how if we are going to be the ‘poor in spirit’ as appose to the rich by worldy standards, our success rate (in the world’s eyes) will drop dramatically. So I guess that question is what do we measure success by. If we keep our eyes focussed on our eternal hope and ground ourselves in the gospel and hang around Christian encouragers, then this will make it easier for us to see ourselves as more naturally in the ‘poor in spirit’ category and place less emphasis on ‘success’. This totally lifts a burden, because even though we should work in all things as we’re working for Christ, if our careers or study (or other aspects of life the the world deems as the more important) fail us, it’s all cool, because to God, the only thing that matters is being righteous – “seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt Ch 6 v 33). Phew, takes a load off.
