Jesus isn’t yellow

Does the nightly news broadcast make you tired? The other night it was serious news that the Obama family had chosen a new dog. Please.
Apparently there’s this thing called ‘Yellow Journalism’ - I’m no expert, but it’s when the media downplays serious stories for eye-catching headlines that help sell their product. Basically it’s big on causing sensation, sacrificing content.
How refreshing is the Bible in such a world! It doesn’t pull any punches to please the public, and neither does it beat up a story to suck us in. The case in point is Jesus’ crucifixion- a gruesome, sensational, attention-grabbing event, perfect for a headline. But the gospel writers make little mention of all the gore that would make it ‘news’ – Mark just says ‘And they crucified him…’ (15:24). The lasting News of Jesus is in the profound content of what he did on the cross. That’s why 2000 years later we don’t wrap fish and chips with pages from the Bible. Pretty cool, hey.
