Wise by human standards

Following on from Sam’s post about O-Day. I’ve been reflecting on the differences between O-Day at UWA and ECU, or more accurately the differences between the students at the two unis. I was helping with the UWA CU O-Day stall and it really struck me how disdainful many of the students were. Lots of them seemed too cool for school—or at least trying to convey that impression.

What has surprised me is that by and large it wasn’t like that at ECU. Sure, lots of people weren’t Christian and weren’t really interested in talking, but I don’t remember anyone sneering or answering the question, “Are you a Christian?” with the “as if!” tone of voice that so many UWA students used.

It reminded me of 1 Corinthians 1:26–27 where Paul reminds the Corinthians that “Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.”

UWA students are wise by human standards, but let’s pray that God would use ‘foolish’ ECU students to shame the ‘wise’ at UWA.
